A school community is more than a place to learn. It is a place of connection, family, and shared memories. For many, it becomes a home away from home.

That is certainly true for long-time educator Clinton Gertenrich, who is experiencing a homecoming at Candalaria Elementary in the South Salem Hills.

“My own kids attended Candalaria, one of my first leadership roles was here at Candalaria and now, I get to follow up an incredible leader, Jason Gundlach, who has set up our school community for tremendous growth in the coming years,” said Gertenrich.

“I’ve had the opportunity to experience every perspective of our school, a parent, an educator, a community member, it’s helped me see the power of school community.”

That deep connection to community has been central to Candalaria’s success. In recent years, the school has seen exponential growth, especially in the area of early literacy. Clinton attributes this progress to the way families, educators, and students work together.

When students feel safe, valued, and celebrated, and when teachers are empowered as leaders, students engage more deeply as learners.

“When students feel safe, valued, and celebrated, and when teachers are empowered as leaders, students engage more deeply as learners. That’s why we’re seeing both academic results and a stronger sense of community."

"At Candalaria, we believe equity, excellence, and shared leadership go hand in hand, and we’re committed to ensuring every Husky becomes a confident, joyful learner. We have made it known that literacy is a team sport–students, staff, and families all have a role.”
